Individual Counseling
Treatment Philosophy
While I may pull from many different treatment orientations to help tailor therapy to your unique needs, I mostly use cognitive-behavioral therapy with a meaning-making influence. I also incorporate mindfulness and self-compassion focused therapies. I believe everything we do ultimately means something to us and our interpretation of the situations or moments in our lives informs us about ourselves, our interactions with others, and our beliefs of the world around us. I believe that mental illness results from misinterpreted "stuck" moments that we use to reinforce negative beliefs we have about ourselves, and by understanding and reinterpreting our "stuck" moments, we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves. I believe therapy's ultimate goal is to change how we approach life's moments and find our own meaningful strategies in solving our stuckness.
In therapy, I encourage client's to engage themselves in kinder and gentler ways that combat the sting and burden of shame. I believe that shame is a powerful, universal experience that drives our disconnection to others and problem behaviors and thoughts. Working with me, my clients learn to practice self-compassion through meditation, changing the relationship they have with themselves, and seeing themselves as worthy of love and belonging.
More than anything, I believe the client is in charge of their treatment and I offer a warm and safe place for you to discover and grow at a pace that is comfortable for you.
While I work with individuals from all walks of life, I specialize in working with persons of color and those of the queer community struggling with issues related to trauma, shame depression/anxiety, lack of self-confidence, identity crises, and developing a strong sense of self.
